Brittany Holiday Part 2 - We Stumble Upon a Megalith

Gosh I hope you're not fed up with all these holiday pics!

To tell you the truth, I love sharing my photos and I know you enjoy them from your lovely comments (thank you!) but these posts are as much for me as I'm pretty rubbish at printing out photos and organising albums.....

So here goes....Brittany Holiday Part 2....

An overnight stop at a lovely aire at Locmariaquer on the South Coast led to a long walk along the La Falaise beach....

Chris demonstrating how quickly the tide comes in......

Lots of seaweed and rock pools....

and a jelly fish.........

As we returned from the beach, we spotted this menhir or standing stone and went to investigate.....

As we got closer we could see there were several large stones or megaliths on the ground. Chris said he thought it was a dolmen which I remembered was a some sort of ancient tomb....

After some research later on, I discovered that this place is Les Pierres Plates (the flat stones....makes sense!).....a neolithic burial chamber.

Chris and Spencer were keen to investigate further.......

It was fascinating and very atmospheric.......so old.....around 3000 BC.....

Chris discovered a decorated pillar.....

......so beautiful.......but not yet deciphered......looks like a maze or map?

I found this photo which shows Les Pierres Plates from above.....pretty impressive.....

Courtesy of http://locmariaquer.info/f10f_pierplat.htm

Apparently many of these stone dolmens would have been covered in small stones or earth but weather over time has worn these away and now just the stone burial chambers are left.

Les Pierres Plates have really piqued my interest and I'd love to visit some of the many other megaliths that are found in Brittany.

To be continued......Part 3 coming up soon.....hooray!.....(it will be the last part!)

Our First Anniversary on the Beach!

I can't believe it's a year since we got married on the beach in Barbados.

Nor can I believe that it's already a week since we returned from a very relaxing three week holiday back there.

Of course we had to return to that beach again for our first anniversary!

We've had a wonderful holiday and it was lovely to spend time with Chris's parents, Dorothy and Bob.....

When I say relaxing, I mean relaxing!

On the beach....

enjoying many a rum punch...

dining out with friends.......

taking a dip in the pool....

catching up with friends at the fish fry.....

enjoying the beautiful blue skies....

and the gorgeous flowers.....

and the colours.....

meeting friends for lunch....

enjoying a good old English breakfast!!.....

some crocheting of course.....

and watching the beautiful sunsets.....

We didn't want our holiday to end but when we arrived home it was lovely to see our two fur babies..... Spencer.....

and Max.......

......as we had missed them so much!

Thank you for visiting!

Fossils, Strawberries, Patchwork and a Pig

So I've shared my Somerset patchwork block with you but what about our little holiday?

Our camp site was at the foot of the beautiful Quantock Hills....

What glorious weather we had for those few days we were away?!

The sun never stopped shining :)

Here are a few of the things we got up to..........

Lots of dining (and a bit of drinking) al fresco!

I love it when the weather's good as Chris likes to take charge of our little gas barbeque and I don't have to cook!!

Visiting the animals where we were staying.......chickens, sheep and pigs...this muddy one was fast asleep in the shade.....

Some patchwork of course.....

The beautiful Somerset farmland........

Chilling out under Harvey J.....

And under my Wool-eater blanket........yes that's my knees!

Pretty cornflowers....

Fish and chips for lunch.......

....whilst watching the boats in Watchet's pretty harbour.....

Walks with Spencer in the evening sun.....

Strawberry fields.......for as far as the eye can see.....

Relaxing with more patchwork and Chris carving a sculpture from wood.....

Visiting the spectacular Jurassic Kilve Beach........

.....with it's extraordinary rock formations of limestone and shale.....

.....and fabulous fossils...............

......we found some ammonites but there are reptile remains too.....

I definitely recommend a visit if you like rocks, fossils, rock pools.......the kids will love it.....and so will the dog :).............

Also time for a spot of knitting.............

And on the last day, a delicious cooked breakfast of course ;)

See you soon,

Maggie xx
